QUEENS, N.Y. — Traffic changes are now in effect for two new busways in Queens.
This past weekend marked the soft opening of the Jamaica Avenue and the Archer Avenue busways.
Only buses, trucks and emergency vehicles can drive in these areas. The city says the busways will speed up service on more than 30 bus routes and improve truck movement in the area as well.
The busway on Jamaica Avenue is open in both directions from Sutphin Boulevard to 168th Street and the Archer Avenue lane is open eastbound from 150th to 160th streets.
Both busways are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Restrictions are enforced through NYPD traffic agents, who will issue warnings and summonses.
Automated cameras will eventually take over.
The Department of Transportation says it expects the busways to be fully operational by the end of the week.
