QUEENS, N.Y. — The FDNY says the charging of an e-bike battery caused a house fire in Queens early Wednesday morning that left a 9-year-old-boy dead.

Fire officials say it broke out in the basement unit of a home located at 81-19 102nd Road in Ozone Park around 2 a.m. and moved up to the third floor.

Once the flames were out, firefighters found Remi Hernandez unconscious inside the home.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The FDNY says 14 people were removed from the building. Ten people, including a firefighter, were treated for minor injuries.

The boy is the third person to die from a fire stemming from charging an e-bike battery this year.

"These batteries have been known to overheat and been know to explode," said FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro. "People go to sleep, they take a long time to charge, so they'll charge them overnight. And as in this instance a boy wakes up and there's no way out."

The FDNY says there have been 56 instances this year of e-bike or e-scooter batteries catching fire, resulting in three deaths, including the 9-year-old boy, and 60 injuries.

As the investigation continues, NY1 has been told the family of the boy are staying with other families while they mourn their loss.
