QUEENS, N.Y. - A 10-year-old boy has died while his mother remains in critical condition after they were hit by a city garbage truck Tuesday morning in Queens.
It happened around 7 a.m. outside the Le Frak City apartment complex along 57th Avenue and 97th Street in Corona.
Police say a large DSNY truck filled with garbage was pulling out of a driveway on 57th Street when it hit the mother and her 10-year-old son.
They were both taken to Elmhurst Hospital.
People who live in the neighborhood say these types of accidents are too common.
"It's sad. Things like that happen all the time. I think it;s something to get used to you have to be more careful when you go out in the streets," said one resident.
"I live in this building, yeah sometimes when I drive from here when I try especially this intersection when I'm trying to get into my parking lot some people try to cross yellows," said another resident.
Police say the driver of the sanitation truck stayed at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
