QUEENS, N.Y. - Hundreds of airline food catering workers rallied for better treatment at John F. Kennedy Airport on Tuesday — one of the busiest travel days of the year.
About 60 people were arrested during the rally and die-in at the American Airlines terminal.
Workers are demanding better wages, health benefits and working conditions.
The labor group "Unite Here" says most airline food workers are paid minimum wage with no benefits.
"Why shouldn't workers that are working hard every single day on holidays not have proper healthcare to cover their families, their children if they are to get sick. I mean you work long hard hours, you're underpaid, and then on top of that you don't have any healthcare for your families," said one rally attendee.
The food employees at JFK work for a third party company.
In response to their protest, American Airlines says it's in no position to control the outcome of their contract negotiations.
