QUEENS, N.Y. - It is a murder mystery that has shocked business owners and residents of Astoria’s busy Steinway Street.
According to police, last Thursday they got a call of a foul smell coming from the second floor of her apartment building located at 2555 Steinway.
After after forcing their way inside, police found the body of 28-year-old Dhuha Sabaa.
"I used to see her like over here or across the street by the hookah place and she is a nice girl," said Sadouki Mustapha, an Astoria resident.
Police say Sabaa was lying on the floor inside her room with lacerations to her chest.
According to authorities, the doors were locked and there were no signs of forced entry.
It's left those who knew her scratching their heads as to who would do this to someone who kept to themselves.
"No surprised, I am sick you know, honestly you know I swear to God, I cannot even sleep. I mean I have no relationship besides when I walk I see her but inside it is like I pray that I might dream of the person who did that," said one Astoria resident.
Neighbors say Sabba, originally from Iraq, had only moved to Astoria about a month ago.
In that time she had a handful of jobs at local businesses near her apartment, including one at a 99 Cent store.
Another employee said she last worked there two weeks ago, but only did the job for about half a day, saying she didn’t like it.
“When they told me Dhuha she is dead, I said what happened? Because you know a couple of days I saw her she was good you know," said Ghanima Ejallali, a store employee.
No arrests have yet been made and police say the investigation is still ongoing.
