QUEENS, N.Y. - You don't have to travel to the wilderness to enjoy luxury camping.
In fact, you don't even have to leave the five boroughs.
Camp Rockaway has reopened for its third season at Jacob Riis Park.
The Rockaways camp brings with it beach camping with luxuries, including beds with fresh linens, hot showers, a fire pit to cook your own food, hammocks and board games to help keep you entertained, without breaking a sweat.
The camp's owner, Kent Johnson, says he was inspired to create the grounds after seeing some postcards of tent colonies on the beach from the 1900's and as a way to extend the time away from the concrete jungle.
"I've been surfing out here for quite a while and always dreading that trip home whether it be on the subway, or long drive in traffic and what not; and I thought there's got to be a way that we can stay out here," Johnson said.
Camp Rockaway is open now through October 15.
The camp says it hopes to remain open a little longer if the weather permits.
