With summer well on its way, even sheep are ready to take off their winter coats.

The Queens Zoo held its annual Sheep shearing event on Sunday.

The 18 sheep are only shorn of their heavy wool coats once each year, right before the summer season.

The makeover is also an educational event for the community, with lessons on the animals during the shearing process. For many residents, this is first time they’ve seen sheep without their coats.

“The big thing is that they don't realize how much wool is actually on a sheep and so when you get done shearing the animal that was underneath all that wool, it’s actually very skinny. So, usually the first thing that they say is like 'oh my gosh look how skinny it is,'" said Craig Gibbs, Assistant Curator at the zoo.

The shearing event at the Queens Zoo will continue Sundaystarting at 11 am and the sheep at Prospect Park zoo will get their turn next weekend.
