Authorities from the United States Drug Enforcement Agency have taken a St. Joseph’s doctor into custody.

Dr. Andrew Rudin, an Oswego-based cardiologist, was escorted to federal offices where he was presented with federal charges against him on Wednesday. The charges stem from the criminal actions of a nurse he supervised for five months in Tennessee more than two years ago.

According to court documents that nurse, Jeff Young, is accused of inappropriately prescribing controlled substances for notoriety, status, sex, and money. Rudin allegedly agreed to supervise and review charts for Young's patients back in 2016.

Rudin knew Young Young prescribed controlled substances not for a legitimate medical purpose and outside the course of professional practice, and Rudin accepted money derived from the proceeds of the conspiracy in exchange for his purported supervision, court documents say.

The charges are not related to St. Joseph’s Health in any way, according to a representative of the hospital.

Dr. Rudin is cooperating with authorities and has been placed on administrative leave while the matter is reviewed. St. Joseph’s Health leaders and Oswego office managers are working to continue care for Rudin’s patients during this investigation.
