A local library is adding a new language to their roster of books.
Elmhurst Library just released a collection of Burmese language books on Friday. This is the city's first and only free publicly circulated Burmese books. More than 130 titles were purchased with funds collected by the Burmese-American community and were selected with help from a contact in Myanmar.
Organizers say that according to the 2016 American Community Survey more than two thousand Burmese speakers live in the borough and predominantly live in Elmhurst.
Fred Gitner, Assistant Director of Queens Library says "People want to be able to communicate with their neighbors and make them feel welcomed as well. So this is a continuation of that whole concept of Queens Library welcomes all."
The collection includes books for adults and children and includes some bilingual books. The library says it plans to add to the collection in the future.
