Two firefighters in the Rockaways are being hailed as heroes for saving several people from a burning apartment building, including a baby.
According to the FDNY, Lieutenant Joseph Costa of Ladder 137 and Lieutenant Sean Hayden of Ladder 121 rushed into 173 Beach 91st Street at around 2 am on Sunday.
When they arrived they reported a woman was straddling a third floor window sill holding a baby.
Apparently she was trying to find someone she could to drop the baby to, in an effort to save the child.
Hayden and Costa were able to make their way to the woman and child, rescuing both, despite heavy smoke.
A total of 15 people were injured in the blaze, 2 were seriously hurt.
Fire officials said the cause for the 2 alarm fire was accidental and started with an unattended candle; the building also lacked working smoke alarms.
