MATTYDALE, N.Y. -- A once popular movie theater in Mattydale is coming down after sitting vacant for nearly 30 years.

Cinema North in Mattydale is being demolished, more than two-decades after it was shut down.

The eyesore has sat unused in the K-Mart Plaza since 1990.

It's a relief for neighboring business owners, but a day of nostalgia for people who grew up in the area.

One woman actually showed up at 8 a.m. with a bucket of popcorn in hand, to watch what she described as the final show.

"All of us neighborhood kids would come out here. I had to call my sister this morning down in Virginia and ask what movies did we see and who came with us? So she was telling all the neighborhood kids who went and came over here. We saw Jaws and ET here, those are some old classics from our day," said Doreen Benedict, a North Syracuse resident.

Officials say they do expect the property owners will turn the space into a new business.
