A park in Woodside will see a big renovation just in time for the 100th anniversary of World War I.

City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer announced $750,000 for work at Doughboy Park Wednesday.

The project will include restoration work to the World War I memorial statue and the surrounding plaza. Crews will replace broken slate on the ground, repaint, and plant additional greenery.

The Doughboy statue was last renovated in 1990 and the plaza surrounding it in 2001.

“The Doughboy is an important figure in Woodside,” Van Bramer said. “The Doughboy literally overlooks us all and watches over Woodside. So we want to honor the Doughboy and all of the men and women that he represents.”

“Doughboy” is an informal term for an American infantryman who served in World War I.
