Students in College Point are getting a middle school right in their backyard.

The old St. Fidelis School on 14th Ave will re-open its doors to sixth graders in Fall 2018 as JHS 336.

The DOE said this new site will help alleviate overcrowding in the district. Council Member Paul Vallone said it will seat 507 students.

Right now, parents and advocates tell us the closest middle schools are in Flushing and Whitestone. They said those schools take about 20 minutes to get to.

"You can't go from public school to a high school without having a school in the district so this is really a great step for the continuity of education that College Point hasn't had before," said Councilman Vallone.

"This is a great benefit. There's no bus traveling. There's no nothing. All the kids within the same community could just walk to school," said parent Alejandro Ortiz.

If you want to learn more, there will be a community meeting on May 3 at 7PM at 30-48 Linden Place in Flushing.
