A Dutch Kills playground is getting a $4.5 million overhaul, to transform it into a green oasis. NY1’s Clodagh McGowan filed the following report.

The Dutch Kills playground is getting its first upgrade in more than two decades.

The $4.5 million overhaul will transform it from a concrete jungle to a green oasis.

That’s something students like Kaylee Choi are looking forward to.

"I would like fresh air to play in and like the trees add some shade. And I would love some greenery," said Choi, a fourth-grader at PS 112.

Officials unveiled the design at nearby PS 112 Tuesday.

Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski says in addition to the new playground equipment, a vibrant green space is a priority for the community.

"Beyond improving the play spaces for the kids with new swings and new play equipment and the upgraded comfort stations, the greening will really be tremendous," said Lewandowski.

Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer helped secure the funding for the playground.

He says the upgrades will greatly improve the quality of life for people living in the neighborhood.

"It's softening the environment, it's allowing children to experience nature more than they would have and while they're busy on those swings, they will also be surrounded by beauty," said Van Bramer.

Choi says it'll also be the perfect environment for kids to exercise.

"We need to stay active and healthy," said Choi.

The design still needs the approval of the community board. Then the city will take bids from contractors. The Parks Department expects to begin construction next year.
