NEW YORK - The NYPD will begin issuing new gun holsters to all officers beginning next month.
The change comes after 30 year old Efrain Guzman was able to an grab officer's gun while in custody in the Bronx back in August - using it to allegedly kill 49 year old Wali Camara.
Police Commissioner James O'Neill says the department realized they needed an upgrade following the incident.
"We saw that there might have been an issue with that. Going forward there is a different level that we are going to as they cycle through their outdoor range and their firearm cycle they will be issued new holsters," O'Neill said.
The new holsters will have an automatic locking system, making it more difficult for a suspect to snatch an officer's gun.
About 8,000 officers have been trained with the new holsters.
