ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A Rochester-area organization is working to cut down on hunger and homelessness in the community.

The Catholic Family Center hosted its annual "Empty Bowls" fundraiser Thursday night. Attendees received a handmade ceramic bowl full of all the soup and bread they could eat. Organizers say the event is vital to helping people stay off the streets.

"The money is very important," said Lisa Lewis, crisis and stabilization services vice president. "We have many of our families who are living on the brink and Catholic Family Center being there to offer them the opportunity to have a safe place, to have food, to have transportation, to have assistance to find housing. That money will go many directions to help these women, stabilize and become independent."

The Catholic Family Center is a major provider of comprehensive family services locally.
