CHARLOTTE – Northlake Mall will be open for business Tuesday after being evacuated Monday.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say someone called 911 to report shots being fired near the mall.
It happened just before 3:15 p.m.
No victims or suspects were found.
The mall was partially evacuated before it was determined that there were no victims.
The mall reopened for business a short time later.
Police were in the area looking for any suspicious activity.
For mall employee Janeal Thomas, Monday's chaos was a little too familiar.
"This is my second go around with the shooting unfortunately here. I was here the first time it happened,” said Thomas.
The Northlake Mall was the scene of a fatal shooting on Dec. 24, 2015.
A shopper was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer after getting into a fight, then pointing a gun at the officer. Prosecutors have ruled that the shooting was justified.
Since then, Thomas said mall employees haven't had much training on how to handle situations like this.
"It would really come in handy because like today it’s you don't know what's going on, you don't know what to expect and for us to be aware, this is a whole lot different than a fire drill,” said Thomas.
North Charlotte resident Ed Uslick wasn't at the mall during the incident but he said he's still shaken up about what happened.
"We live a half mile away from this and we see helicopters all the time, police sirens, fire trucks like they're coming more and more every day from seven years when we first moved here,” said Uslick.
He said he's not sure what police can do to prevent situations like this one in the future.
"What can you do? I mean what are you going to do put security guards up on every entrance into the mall and screen everybody? You can't do that that's invasion of privacy,” he said.
CMPD is asking anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
