It may not look like much from afar, but wrestling is considered to be the most dangerous sport for young male athletes.
"When you see wrestling you think they're just rolling around but, really, it's more than that," said Addison Waite.
The Datalys Center of Sports Injury Research and Prevention found that, while football has the most injuries in the games wrestling poses the highest injury risk.
Surprised?
Researchers combined injuries sustained during practice and competitions.
They found that out of 1,000 times young wrestlers engaged in the sport, 13 of them get hurt.
At that same rate, nine football players get injured.
That means, most injuries happen at practice.
Dr. Martha Pyron of Medicine in Motion said, "I was surprised as well to hear that. You'd think it's football or ice hockey or one of the combative sports."
Student wrestler, Addison Waite, has been slammed to the ground, injured his meniscus and chipped his thumb at practice and during matches.
He says wrestling is a very involved contact sport.
Waite added, "In wrestling, you're basically immobilizing your opponent, putting them on their back and by doing that you're bending a lot of different parts of them so I don't think there's a way for you to prevent the injuries."
Dr. Pyron added, "Basically, you can see head to toe injuries. It's a combat sport, there's rules to it, but they can land different ways and be thrown down. You can see head injuries, neck injuries, shoulder injuries, knee injuries, ankle injuries. Yeah, it can be quite diverse."
Just like any other student athlete, Waite is not about to quit.
He's in it to win it, while strategically keeping himself intact.
Waite continued, "It's not really a matter of worrying about what your opponent is doing, it's a matter of worrying about what you're doing so you don't get hurt and then you can end up winning the match."
