A public housing complex in Queens will get a security upgrade as part of a state project to combat crime in housing developments.
Assembly Woman Margaret Markey and other leaders announced a $1 million state grant for security upgrades at the Woodside Houses Tuesday. The grant will pay for security cameras to be installed in all elevators, hallways, lobbies and stairwells inside the twenty-building community.
The money is part of the state's Home and Community Renewal initiative, which in part helps fund crime fighting enhancements in housing projects.
“We have the cameras around the outside, but the elevators are where we have a lot of our situations going on,” said Woodside Houses resident Ann Cotton Morris. “We wanted to be safe in our elevators and our buildings, so this was the best way.”
“Things do happen, and this is a reason for us to bring home money from Albany so that my constituents and the residents of my district can feel safe,” Markey added.
There's no word on when the work may be complete.
