City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer was joined by first graders from P.S.343 at the corner of 42nd Street and 47th Avenue Monday to protest for safer streets near their school.
The students gathered to call on the Department of Transportation to install a traffic signal at the intersection.
The students marched to a nearby mail box where they dropped off letters for the DOT.
Parents say the city is asking for families to cross in danger by not installing a traffic light.
"It's dangerous every morning for everybody that has to cross it and as the school grows that number is only going to increase and the cars are not slowing down," said parent Mike Wallace
Added Councilman Van Bramer, "We've had six separate collisions at this intersection in the last year or so with 12 different individuals hurt. We can not wait a day longer."
The DOT says the school is located in a designated Neighborhood Slow Zone, but they are also currently researching the area surrounding PS 343 for additional safety enhancements.
