For Matthew Jensen, all roads lead back to Queens. As the artist-in-resident for the Queens Museum's Studio in the Park, Jensen is curating a "cabinet of oddities" found walking around the borough.
"I've got a collection of about 5,000 artifacts, from colonial times to today, like modern stuff to old stuff, all found in public space but laying around as garbage," Jensen said.
The artist has mapped out 14 walks starting in all five boroughs that ultimately lead back to the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
"The idea is to share that these are very doable walks, that you can walk from the Bronx, like I did this morning. I walked here from the Bronx, and it was one of the most amazing walks," he said.
His exhibit, "A Collection of Walks," is open to the public through August 16. Along with the unique items he's collected on his journeys, Jensen will also have photographs on display.
"The idea that I can do this with stuff found in public space is kind of the little 'aha' that I hope they leave with, so that they can look a little harder at the everyday," said Jensen.
Ultimately, the artist will create a map of his walks, which he hopes will allow others to follow in his footsteps.
