A free photo exhibit in Broad Channel shows the beauty in some local feathered friends.

The "Birds Among Us" exhibit shows photos of birds in their natural habitat throughout the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.

Long Island Photographer Lawrence Monat is an attorney by trade. He always loved taking pictures of the birds he would see in state parks.

He said he doesn't use Photoshop, just lots of patience, to capture just the right moment.

"It is the birds, but it's more than that. It's an artistic endeavor in terms of the whole picture," Monat said.

"These photographs are, it's incredible. I never knew that there were these many species of birds out there," said Karen Sklaire, who visited the exhibit.

The exhibit is part of an ongoing series about nature among city life at the refuge.

The exhibit will be on display for the next two months.
