Hawaii starter Sebastian Gonzalez got knocked out of the game on a comebacker he took in the first inning. UC Irvine starter Trevor Hansen went the distance.

The Hawaii baseball team’s chances to make some postseason noise were dampened again on Friday at Anteater Ballpark, as Hansen threw the first UCI complete game in four years in a three-hit, 4-0 blanking of the visitors on Friday evening in Irvine, Calif.

UH (25-12, 10-10 Big West) lost its third straight conference series. It has dropped four of five BWC games on its two-week road trip against contenders Cal Poly (27-10, 15-2) and UCI (27-9, 15-2) and will attempt to salvage the series finale, which is set to begin at 10 a.m. Hawaii time Saturday.

Rich Hill’s club has fallen to sixth place. Only the top five will advance to the inaugural Big West tournament in Fullerton, Calif., in May. After Saturday, there are three conference series left, plus a home four-game series against No. 6 Oregon State.

Only six ‘Bows reached base against Hansen (6-0), who struck out 10 with two walks allowed in a 120-pitch outing. No UH player reached second base.

The 6-foot-2 sophomore from Simi Valley became the first UCI player to throw a complete game since 2021, and the 58th in program history.

After falling 3-1 in the series opener Thursday, UH caught a tough break early when starter Sebastian Gonzalez took a comebacker from UCI’s Colin Yeaman, the second batter he faced. Gonzalez finished out the inning but was replaced for the second.

Charlie Adamson (0-1) did not record an out in relief of Gonzalez, allowing two singles and a two-RBI double before he was pulled. Max Jones, Zacary Tenn, Jimmy Urban and Anthony Andrews worked the rest of the game with the Anteaters tacking on two more runs in the sixth.

Matthew Miura, Shunsuke Sakaino and Kedren Kinzie had the hits for UH.
