According to the NYPD, a 57-year-old woman was shot to death after opening her apartment door as her husband was being robbed by two suspects in the hallway.

“I was really afraid for my life,” neighbor Jonn Lee said.

Lee is among the residents of the Chinatown building located at 44 Market Street who say they’re in shock after the incident took place.

“To be honest, I didn’t really open the door. I was really afraid for my life,” he said. “I didn’t know what was occurring. I thought the best thing that I could have done was call the police.”

Lee, who lives on the same floor as the victim, said he called 9-1-1.

“I just heard a fight occur. I didn’t really hear anything specific,” he said. “A fight and a gunshot, and then I called for help.”

Police sources tell NY1 the incident began just after 11 p.m. when the victim’s husband was followed into their Market Street building by two suspects. After exiting the elevators on the eighth floor where his family lived, investigators say the two suspects pistol whipped him and stole his phone and cash.

His wife opened the door and went into the hallway with her son where police say she was shot in the head and later pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

According to police, the two suspects were masked and fled. '

Hours later on Wednesday, community police handed out literature on safety tips, including not to let anyone into your building.

“Even me when I walk here. I always look back and when I see someone entering the building, I won’t go in,” Morales said.

Some neighbors said that crime has gotten worse recently, and they’d like to see a stronger police presence.

“For some reason, in this area, it’s been that way. At least by market street,” Morales said. “More cops, said another neighbor.

Police describe the two suspects they’re looking for as two males wearing ski masks, last seeing fleeing the location in an unknown direction.
