Police are looking for a man who they say sexually assaulted a woman while she was sunbathing in Central Park Monday afternoon.

NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said a 21-year-old woman was sunbathing in the Great Hill section of Central Park at around 1:30 p.m. when a man who was exposing himself came towards her. According to Chell, the man tackled her from behind when she initially tried to flee, but the woman was eventually able to fight the man off. The man then fled the scene, Chell said.

The woman was transported to an area hospital, police said.

Chell said the man is identified by police as in his 30s and approximately 6 feet tall, with curly hair. The man was last seen wearing a light-colored shirt and shorts, Chell said.

According to Chell, police are currently searching the park with “numerous uniformed officers” and “drones” around the park that are monitored by police.

Officers will continue to search for witnesses and look over surveillance footage, officials said.

According to officials, the goal is to put cameras in parts of the park that are not illuminated.

“That’s where we’re likely to seek them prey. You know, seek out vulnerable New Yorkers,” Kaz Daughtry, deputy commissioner of operations, said at the news conference.

Some say they are on alert as they walk through Central Park.

“Being a young woman living here, I’m wondering when I’m going to have a story to contribute,” Manhattan resident Sophie Huskin said.

“I used to avoid sitting with a lot of people at the park. I like to be in some secluded area, but now I think I’m going to be sitting somewhere more near people,” Manhattan resident Farah Ahmed said.

No arrests have been made, and investigation is ongoing, officials said.
