Council Speaker Adrienne Adams didn’t hold back on Thursday in criticizing the mayor’s blossoming relationship with the White House.

“We’ll continue to stand firm to protect the rights and safety of all New Yorkers against the Trump Administration even if our mayor will not,” she said.

What You Need To Know

  • Council Speaker Adrienne Adams criticized the mayor on Thursday following his united front with Trump border czar Tom Homan earlier in the week announcing a gang takedown

  • The speaker accused the mayor of a being a "subsidiary of the Trump administration" as the two have locked horns over allowing ICE back onto Rikers Island

  • Homan made a surprise visit to the city Tuesday amid the battle and arrests to tout the positive work immigration authorities have done in the city

Speaker Adams specifically took issue with Mayor Eric Adams and Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, standing united as the city announced the takedown of nearly 30 alleged gang members earlier this week.

“Their press conference undermined the claim of the necessity to have an office for ICE because they can clearly collaborate on criminal enforcement without it. The only logical conclusion is that they plan to violate the law by enacting civil immigration enforcement if given the keys to Rikers,” she said.

A legal battle is brewing over allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement to reopen its office on the jail complex.

Amid the battle, Homan paid a surprise visit to the city on Tuesday to announce the arrests.

“I’m really happy about this event today, so maybe the naysayers will see what collaboration looks like, what the results look like. This city is safer today,” Homan said Tuesday.

For the speaker, the visit only fueled allegations that Mayor Adams is delivering on an agreement for getting his corruption charges dropped by the justice department.

“His behavior this week, as a subsidiary of the Trump administration, showed his willingness to spread misinformation that even contradicts the Supreme Court multiple times. His actions this week seem to demonstrate that he is really fulfilling his bargain with Donald Trump,” she said.

The mayor’s press secretary shot back in a statement, saying: “Maybe if Adrienne Adams spent less time being a subsidiary of the far left and more time in neighborhoods most affected by gang violence — speaking with its victims — she’d understand that public safety isn’t red or blue; it’s life or death."

Meanwhile, Mayor Adams was on Long Island earlier Thursday touting gun safety. He was at a plant destroying more than 3,500 illegal guns and rifles.

The event included throwing the guns onto a conveyor belt to be shredded and turned into recycled material and scrap metal.

“This is for Officer Mora and Rivera,” Mayor Adams said as he threw multiple guns into the machine in honor of the fallen police officers.

Adams and other city officials said the event was about making sure the guns never hurt another New Yorker.

“These are weapons of destruction, these are weapons of pain, these are weapons of chaos that we are removing off our streets,” the mayor said.

“These deadly weapons will never again be a threat,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

The mayor said his administration has seized more than 21,000 illegal guns off city streets since taking office.
