Mayor Eric Adams, New York City elected officials and worker’s unions gathered in Times Square Saturday to rally for the city to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
Adams said the city, with its diversity, represents the American dream.
“You bring your culture, you bring your lifestyle. You bring your vision and add it to the American dream and that’s the combination that makes us great,” he said.
“Democratic National Conventions in New York have sent winning candidates to the White House,” Rep. Jerry Nadler, who represents parts of Manhattan’s Upper West Side and East Side, said at the rally.
The last time the DNC was held in New York City was in 1992, when former President Bill Clinton was elected.
Officials Saturday touted everything the city has to offer.
“What other city has all the hotels, the shops, the restaurants, the museums? The broadway theater, none,” said Nadler.
The big apple is up against Chicago, Illinois and Atlanta, Georgia.
Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine is not pulling any punches in the competition.
“If you want to go out to dinner at Cracker Barrel, you can go to one of the other host cities. If you want to enjoy the best restaurants on earth, you come to New York City,” said Levine.
Madison Square Garden has been proposed as the central convention site, with the Jacob Javits Center to play a supporting role.
