The line outside of the Fort Washington Avenue Armory in Northern Manhattan hasn’t let up since early voting began a week ago. There are two lines, one for voting and one to eat. 

They are waiting for Belgian-style waffles, freshly pressed in an iron and smothered in piping hot toppings. 

Waffles & Dinges is a very popular food truck in the city. These days, instead of serving the lunchtime work crowd, it’s been parked outside different poll sites. It is serving early voters and poll workers. 

“We are so excited, and this was such a wonderful treat and a great surprise. We are super appreciative,” said Isabel Cohen after casting her vote.

“We had some long lines, some long days, so it really feels good,” said poll worker, Janet McDowell.

The food was arranged by Pizza to the Polls, an organization founded four years ago that deploys food trucks and arranges food deliveries to polling places with long lines.

Anyone waiting in a long line can report the location on the website. After the location is verified, Pizza to the Polls arranges a delivery, and even gives an estimated wait time.

“i think this is awesome. I really appreciate these guys looking out for us when we are working on these cold, nasty days,” said Faron Henry.

The program operates in New York and other cities. Donors and partner organizations pick up the tab. It began with pizza and expanded to other foods.

This delicious drop-off of waffles was donated by World Central Kitchen. The organization has been providing food relief during the pandemic.

“i teared up. I don’t know why. Of course you know why, but what a lot of wait. Thanks for the free waffle,” said voter Caroline Brazelton.

She said the year has not been as sweet, but the waffle, on the other hand, was a nice surprise.
