With the many entertainment choices New York City has to offer, it can be difficult to decide what to see. Look no further. “On Stage” host Frank DiLella has curated a list of must-see shows this week, guiding you to the best of Broadway, Off-Broadway and beyond.
‘Dead Outlaw’
The celebrated hit Off-Broadway musical Dead Outlaw has “shot” its way from downtown to uptown’s Longacre Theatre. The musical centers around the real-life Elmer McCurdy — an outlaw-turned-corpse-turned-celebrity. It features the same creative team behind the Tony Award-winning The Band’s Visit, including David Yazbek, Itamar Moses and David Cromer. Dead Outlaw begins previews April 12, with an opening set for April 27.
‘Gypsy’
Also on the Main Stem: six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald in Gypsy. In her latest Broadway venture, McDonald tackles the ultimate stage mother, Momma Rose — a woman willing to do anything to make her children stars. McDonald joins host Frank DiLella this weekend on On Stage. Gypsy is playing at the Majestic Theatre.
‘Smile’
On the Off-Broadway front, check out the Marvin Hamlisch and Howard Ashman musical Smile, presented by J2 Spotlight Musical Theater Company. Smile centers on the contestants of the 1985 Young American Miss Pageant in Santa Rosa, California. The musical runs April 10–20 at the AMT Theater on 45th Street.

‘Die Zauberflöte’
Over at the Metropolitan Opera, don’t miss Die Zauberflöte. Simon McBurney is at the helm of this production of Mozart’s fantastical classic The Magic Flute, which features puppetry, projections and a range of special effects. Die Zauberflöte is playing at the Met through April 26.
Betsy Wolfe in concert
And finally, on the cabaret front, don’t miss Betsy Wolfe in concert at So and So’s Piano Bar in Hell’s Kitchen. On April 17 and 26, Wolfe will perform Domino — her one-woman show filled with stories and songs from her showbiz-rich career. She’s set to have some special guests: On April 17, Tom Francis from Sunset Blvd. will join her, and on April 26, it’s Andrew Rannells.
