Mount Sinai Beth Israel officially closed its doors Wednesday, more than two years after the hospital system first announced plans to shut down the Gramercy Park location.

During the morning rush, crews were seen removing signage and other hospital information from the building’s façade.

The hospital began cutting services in September 2023, citing financial losses and decreasing inpatient volumes as reasons for the closure.

The state Department of Health approved the closure last July, on the condition Mount Sinai met certain commitments to ensure continued patient access to care.

In a statement Tuesday, Mount Sinai announced the opening of an urgent care center two blocks away from Beth Israel, on First Avenue, at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai campus on Second Avenue and East 14th Street.

The future of the former hospital remains uncertain.

State Assemblymember Harvey Epstein, who represents the Manhattan neighborhood, has said there needs to be city oversight to ensure what goes there next benefits the community.

“We have a lack of beds in Lower Manhattan. We do know that we need substantial amounts of affordable housing throughout our community, and we have a housing crisis in our city. Those are really important things that we need to talk about,” he said.
