WORCESTER, Mass. - Several people are now displaced follwoing a Worcester fire early Monday morning.

The Worcester Fire Department said icy conditions and strong winds became big factors during the fire, which has destroyed a Worcester three decker.

“Upon arrival, we had heavy fire about 20-30ft in the air," District Fire Chief William Mosley said. "Due to icy conditions and high winds, we had exposure issues in the building to the left and small charring on the building two doors down.”

Worcester firefighters responded to a 3-alarm fire on Stoneland Road just after 5 am on Monday and Mosley said the snow turning to rain and freezing overnight created an issue for responders.

“We had ice over roads. You know, just navigating the streets with heavy vehicles in an emergency is tough in itself," Mosley said. "And then the guys getting their footing about them to be able to stretch lines into place to put the fire under control is a challenge in itself.”

Across the city, the conditions on Monday created issues for commuters.

Fallen trees taking out powerlines over in the West Tatnuck area, vehicles sliding on the city’s hills and getting stuck, and the potholes of winter starting to present hazards for drivers.

While the roads weren’t great for first responders, firefighters said every call presents and different set of challenges and Mosley said they were able to overcome the obstacles.

“You have other companies responding from a distance and potential water problems with frozen hydrants," Mosley said. "But our guys were able to overcome and, limit the damage to, to what we see here.”

WFD said despite the conditions, the fire was put out in about an hour with no reported injuries.
