WISCONSIN — Hours after Wisconsin joined 21 other states — via Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers and Attorney General Josh Kaul — to try to block President Donald Trump's massive cut of federal research funding, a federal judge in Massachusetts temporarily prevented Trump's cuts from going into place.
In a statement issued Monday, Evers said if or when those cuts are made, the Universities of Wisconsin (UW) system could see more than $60 million in cuts. Other research institutions statewide were bracing for more uncertainty as well.
"This is a fairly big deal for a lot of the medial research institutes here in Wisconsin," Sean Kirkby, the senior editor for Wisconsin Health News, said. "[This] will have an impact on what they're able to do, how many employees they have and the research that they're able to accomplish."
If the cuts eventually move forward, Kirkby said it's still to early to know whether the state of Wisconsin, or various health care entities, could make up any of that fiscal shortfall to keep certain research projects on track.
"I think we'll have to see what happens with the injunction," Kirkby said. "There will be immediate impacts if this stands."
