A business in Greenwich Village that’s been open for more than 40 years may have to close in a few weeks.

David Rafael owns David’s Shoe and Watch Repair, which has been open for 42 years. Rafael said COVID-19 wreaked havoc on his business. He had to close for six months, and has been trying to stay afloat ever since.

What You Need To Know

  • David’s Shoe and Watch Repair in Greenwich Village has been open for 42 years

  • The owner said his lease is coming up, and he's nervous he won't be able to afford a new one

  • Customers are rallying to support him and try to keep his business open

But he’s nervous the clock could strike midnight on his business. Rafael said he already owes his landlord money from the pandemic — and now his lease is up at the end of the month.

He says they’re negotiating, but he may not be able to afford the increase.

“Let them decide what they’re going to do,” he said.

So while he waits, some of his customers — who have been loyal for decades — are now stepping up. Many have signed a petition that is now several pages long.

And on the front door, there's a sign for a GoFundMe page, which has raised close to $8,000.

“I’m proud of this. What can I say?” he said.

Rafael may be in his late 70s, but he doesn’t want to retire. He still gets joy helping people in his neighborhood.

He said his lease is up at the end of June, and he hopes to stay open.
