Anthony Corporan said his 2-year-old brother, King, was protective of his 1-year-old brother, Zayden.
“It’s heartbreaking. It’s devastating. They were babies, you know?” Corporan said. “He loved him. He knew that was his brother.”
King died last Monday at Weill Cornell Medical Center following a fire at an apartment complex in Washington Heights last month.
Zayden, who was also caught in the fire, is still at the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
“At the moment, there is no progress,” Corporan said.
As the family grapples with the death of one child and prays for the recovery of a second, the boys’ mother, Skilyn Maldonado, is facing criminal charges, officials said.
“She left the apartment. She shouldn’t have left, but that was her choice and now she has consequences,” Corporan said.
Prosecutors accused the woman of leaving the children, including her 8-year-old, inside the apartment alone for roughly 30 minutes.
Corporan said she was taking care of the kids while he and his father, Gus, were at a memorial for a friend.
Maldonado is now on supervised release.
“If you have kids, please don’t leave them alone. There’s daycare, there are families, there are other people who can help,” Corporan said.
As the family prepares for King’s funeral on Saturday, Corporan said they’re grateful for the community’s support.
“My father needs it. He has nothing right now. Everything’s shattered,” Corporan said.
Maldonado is scheduled to be in court again on April 25, according to officials.
