The FDNY and DEP were called to the scene and able to turn off the water. A couple of hours later, the water had subsided—leaving a crater in the middle of the roadway.
Nobody was injured when the water main line exploded, but some businesses open for Black Friday shopping called it quits early due to the closures. But by 8 p.m., the sidewalks were open and soon part of the road as well. Noah Jackson, the owner of 7th Street Burger, said he’s glad they stuck it out.
“We had to turn off our delivery for about an hour-and-a-half. And then people couldn’t get in, so we didn’t have walk-in customers during that time as well. We thought we’d wait it out though and it benefitted us.”
