Another iconic venue on the verge of shuttering is receiving some much needed support.
Birdland Jazz Club celebrated its 71st anniversary in December, but its future was unclear with indoor dining halted and theaters shuttered.
Owner Gianni Valenti pivoted to virtual shows to keep the venue afloat, but he says that wasn't generating enough revenue.
When Tom D'Angora heard the venue was in danger of closing, he stepped in to form a GoFundMe for the historic club and in just six days, they managed to raise over $170,000. The fundraising effort has now surpassed $215,000.
"We are well on our way to saving Birdland, said D'Angora. "I think it's a wonderful thing and it shows the power of what happens when this community unites. There's nothing theater people and show people can't do and music people can't do."
