A four-and-a-half ton bronze sculpture of a silverback mountain gorilla has come all the way from Australia to Bella Abzug Park in Manhattan.

"King Nyani" by artists Gillie and Marc Chattner, is meant to bring awareness to the endangered animals and serve as a new cultural amenity to the city amid the pandemic.

The gorilla's arms are wide open and up to three people can fit in his hands.

"We might be going through some hard times, but with the Parks Department wanting to bring it here, it’s because we want to bring people outside, we want to bring a little fun and hope to New York City,” said Lauren Pelosi, a spokesperson for Gillie and Marc’s King Nyani.

"You think of a gorilla being sort of aggressive. It's just kind of lying here pretty peacefully. I kind of feel like we're all kind of feeling the same way,” said one parks visitor.

"I think more art is welcome. I think we should have more art to bring us outside, things to see, things to do,” said another.

The sculpture will be up for the next nine months.
