A deadly scaffold collapse on a Murray Hill building on Thursday left one construction worker dead and three others injured, including two workers seriously hurt.
The crew was doing facade restoration work at the top of the 11-story building on East 36th Street and Lexington Avenue when the scaffolding, brick, cornice and debris crashed down to the sidewalk shed shortly before 4:30 p.m.
Witnesses told New York one they heard a loud crash and saw a large plume of smoke.
"There was this huge crash, and the gondola obviously had swung, and I looked out the window and there they were hanging there on their safety harness," said Aubrey Lynch, a resident of the building. "I cannot imagine what happened."
FDNY got to the scene within minutes to look for victims.
Investigators are looking for video, and interviewing workers and witnesses, to see what led to the scaffolding collapse.
The Department of Buildings said the contractor, Edras Group, has no open violations or outstanding fines. It did, however, get 43 violations since 2010, most recently, last September.
There were no violations against the company for the job on East 36th Street.
A phone message left for the company was not returned.
