NEW YORK - The MTA is launching an investigation into what caused an escalator to crumble Monday at a Midtown subway station.

A commuter posted the photo online, saying she heard a loud crash while going up the escalator at the 5th Avenue/53rd Street stop.

The MTA says no injuries were reported.

The agency says it plans to inspect all 231 of its escalators.

Sources say the one that broke down is 22 years old and had maintenance performed just four weeks ago.

Those sources also say the escalator is due for replacement under the MTA's next capital improvement program.
