Some street vendors now have a somewhat permanent home after years of complaints from residents and businesses owners in Inwood.
The vendors set up shop on Post Avenue between 207th Street and 10th avenue in Inwood for the first time on Saturday.
Previously sellers, some operating without licenses, set up haphazardly across the neighborhood selling watches, clothing and other items like kitchen appliances.
Neighbors and businesses complained about the trash they created and that they crowded the sidewalk, so leaders came up with a compromise.
Now the vendors have a special permit allowing them to showcase their wares 29 days a year in the legally designated area.
"It dignifies them. They now have a place that the police won't come and, and, and harass them. Or the police won't come and impact on them negatively. In fact, the police department is here today taking care of them," said Rep. Adriano Espaillat.
The congressman was part of the effort to establish the designated area.
He told NY1 that they are still trying to make the location a permanent pedestrian plaza for the vendors.
