In her new autobiography “Becoming Spectacular,” dancer Jennifer Jones looks back on her career, from becoming the first Black Rockette to performing on Broadway.
Jones made her debut with the Rockettes at Super Bowl XXII in 1987, a moment that she said reaffirmed her passion for dance.
“There’s an ease to finding what you were born to do,” she writes. “It doesn’t mean there won’t be hard work and diligent effort to be applied. But, rather, doing what you love will make you want to work harder.”
In an interview on “Mornings On 1” Wednesday, Jones recalled the moment she learned she was making history.
“After my audition, and after I accepted the job to be a Rockette, I was watching the 11 o’clock news, and Sue Simmons was on, and she said Radio City had hired their first African American Rockette. And I said, ‘Huh? I wonder who that is.’ And my mother called me, and she said, ‘Jennifer, is that you?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know.’ And then later, I was told it was.”
She added that even after thousands of performances, her passion for performing never faded.
“I wanted to perform ever since I was a little girl, and so being on the stage with the lights, the lipstick, the costumes—that’s what I wanted to do,” Jones said. “So I never got bored of it.”
