With a deal now made on discovery law reforms, lawmakers must turn their attention to another issue still up for negotiation — the involuntary commitment of people with severe mental illness.
Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposal would make it easier for local authorities to hospitalize people who cannot provide for their own basic needs, such as food, shelter or medical care.
But advocates are pushing back, saying the state should invest more in mental health resources instead of forcing people into hospitalization.
