Flaco, the Eurasian eagle-owl that soared into New Yorkers’ hearts after his escape from the Central Park Zoo, is getting the Hollywood treatment.
HBO Documentary Films, in production with Sandbox Films and Spinning Nancy, is creating a documentary on Flaco’s remarkable journey—from the moment he was discovered missing from his cage to his life as a free bird in the city.
“I’ve been deeply invested in Flaco from the instant my friend ran into him on the sidewalk on Fifth Avenue. I lost many nights of sleep worrying about him and made deep connections with a group of dedicated birders who documented his extraordinary adventures,” documentary director Penny Lane said in a statement.
Filmmakers are asking the public for help in sharing photos, videos and personal stories to be featured in the film.
Flaco made headlines in February 2023 when he broke out of the zoo and spent a year flying through the skies of Manhattan.
His story came to a tragic end in February 2024 when he collided with a building on the Upper West Side. The Central Park Zoo later said he had high levels of rat poison in his system and was suffering from a “severe pigeon herpesvirus” at the time of his death.
Flaco became a beloved city icon, with fans across the boroughs mourning his loss. Earlier this year, the New-York Historical Society also opened an exhibition titled “The Year of Flaco” in his honor.
