A report from The Partnership for New York City said the city’s fashion industry may need help from those very lawmakers to maintain its position as a global leader.

“New York has always been the place where a trend begins,” Gary Wassner, CEO of Hilldun Corporation, said.

Wassner finances big labels like Vivienne Westwood and Alexander Wang.

“We’re not getting support from the companies and the government that are involved within the fashion industry,” Wassner said.

He was surveyed in the report, which found a loss of roughly 50,000 industry jobs over the last decade. It also found about a 14% decline in the industry’s economic output in the city over the same period.

“Fundamentally fashion is a business, and it should be treated like every other business, but the public seems to think of it as runway shows and fashion models,” Wassner said.

Other issues the report said plagues the industry include the rise of e-commerce, high costs of both doing business and living in the city and consolidation of the industry.

“This report should serve as a wake-up call. The fashion industry is critical to New York,” Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine said.

Like numerous industries, the pandemic hit fashion businesses hard.

Elected leaders at the event say now it’s about how the city and state help those businesses recover.

The report offered recommendations, including helping designers grow their brands, expanding industry partnerships with schools and promoting emerging designers at fashion week.
