It’s not a sport for the faint of heart. Professional bull riders spend what most people would consider a very dangerous eight seconds on the back of a bull — if they can make it that long.

New Yorkers can see the action in person this weekend at Madison Square Garden for the professional bull riders' "PBR Monster Energy Buck Off at The Garden."

What You Need To Know

  • The professional bull riders circuit makes a stop at Madison Square Garden this weekend for the "PBR Monster Energy Buck Off at The Garden"

  • More than 40 of the world's best bull riders will compete

  • This is the 17th time PBR has held an event at Madison Square Garden

  • The event is part of the "Unleash the Beast" series, the premier series of the PBR

“It’s man against beast, 150-pound man versus 2,000-pound bull,” Eli Vastbinder, a professional bull rider, said.

To kick things off, a more low-key bull made his annual guest appearance. Gus appeared alongside stars of the PBR tour, which made a donation to the Garden of Dreams Foundation.

Gus also had some fun with Rangers legend Adam Graves, predicting the winner of the Blueshirts game against the Chicago Blackhawks. Of course, Gus made the right choice for the 1994 Stanley Cup Champions star.

“It’s not very often you get this close to a bull and you see just the power and the sheer size, and certainly, this is a gentler version of the bulls you see on TV, but very intimidating at the same time,” Graves said, who knows a thing or two about competing at The Garden.

The arena makes quite the transition for the event, featuring 1.5 million pounds of dirt. More than 40 of the best bull riders in the world will participate, including Dalton Kasel of Texas, who is well aware of the history of great performances at the arena.

“Their job was basketball, or hockey, and now we get to do our job here,” Kasel said.

This is the 17th visit to The Garden for the PBR circuit, though PBR announcer Matt West said in the first year, there were questions about whether the event would draw a crowd. It wound up doing just that and more.

“It’s incredible that we continue to break records here every year, year after year after year,” West said.
