“I don’t know if we’re gonna be safe in this school,” said Makayla Williams, who attends P.S. 158 in East New York.

Police say an 8-year-old boy brought the unloaded gun to school, sending the building into lockdown.

“I’m scared I’m gonna get [shot] down. I’m just scared,” said Makayla.

Her mother said she can’t imagine how a child so young could get his hands on a firearm.

“It’s insane that this little 8-year-old carried a gun in school. That’s insane,” said Naishea Williams.

Police responded to the school on Ashford Street around 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Officers said they found the weapon in the boy’s backpack.

“I have my kid going to that school and I’m not protected with my kid going to that school at all,” said Naishea.

According to authorities, the boy allegedly menaced another young boy with the unloaded gun on Wednesday and his mother alerted 911.

Parents say the school did not notify them about the incident.

“I don’t really understand the principal because the principal should be on everybody at that school,” said Naishea.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Department of Education said, “It’s extremely worrying when a child this young has access to such a dangerous weapon… All safety procedures were followed in response to this incident, and all students and staff are safe. We’re working closely with NYPD and ACS… to ensure this young person receives the supports they need.”

Sources tell NY1 the child with the gun was taken to into police custody for questioning. No word yet on charges against him or the parents.
