A man was found dead in Newtown Creek in Brooklyn three days after leaving the Brooklyn Mirage, officials say.

Marisa Haber is seeking answers for her friend, John Castic.

“I wish there was a way for me to say, ‘Don’t go,’” said Haber.

She’s part of a network of Castic’s friends who started looking for him after he went missing over the weekend.

Police say Castic left the Brooklyn Mirage, an 80,000-square-foot venue in an industrial part of Bushwick, around 3 a.m. on Saturday.

Haber says he told friends he wasn’t feeling well and wanted to go home. He was never heard from again.

“I think he was probably overstimulated at a very large venue and he wanted to get some air he decided,” said Haber. “But next thing we know, he’s fallen into a body of water and can’t get out.”

Castic moved to Manhattan more than two years ago and was a senior analyst at Goldman Sachs. He was a big Chicago sports fan, rooting for the Bulls and the Bears.

Haber remembers him as a charismatic guy, always willing to go on adventures.

“He just liked to have a good time,” said Haber. “If his friends were going to a concert, he would say, ‘Yes, let’s do it. Let’s live life to the fullest.’”

On Tuesday, officers found an unconscious man floating in Newtown Creek less than half a mile from the Brooklyn Mirage. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Haber says those who knew Castic are still speculating about what happened to him that night.

Some fear he may have been the victim of a robbery or perhaps pushed into the creek, but she believes it was just an unfortunate incident.

“If I had to guess, it was just a tragic accident,” she said.

Back in June, another 27-year-old man named Karl Clemente was also found dead in Newtown Creek after attending a concert at the Brooklyn Mirage.

In the wake of these two deaths, some are concerned about safety outside the venue.

“Regardless of what happened, whether it’s related to Karl Clemente or anyone else, something has to change,” said Haber. “It’s a very dangerous area, it’s not well lit.”

The New York state Liquor Authority has had the Brooklyn Mirage on its radar for several years. The venue has racked up dozens of alcohol-related violations since 2017.

“No matter what happened to John or what state of mind he was in and who was following him or not following him, he needed help. He was trying to just get home,” said Haber.

Avant Gardner, which owns the Brooklyn Mirage, posted a statement to Instagram saying: “We are saddened by the recent passing of John Castic and Karl Clemente... We will continue to provide our full assistance to the investigating authorities.”

Meanwhile, Haber says she hopes Castic knew his friends loved him deeply.

“I love him and I really wanted to see who he was gonna become because I know it was gonna be great,” she said.

It’s still unclear how Castic and Clemente ended up in Newtown Creek.

The medical examiner has not released the cause of death in either case.
