The Brooklyn District Attorney announced a 140 count indictment leading to the arrest of over two dozen alleged gang members and the seizure of dozens of firearms.
Surveillance video from Oct. 2020 shows people shooting from the windows and the sunroof of a white Infinity. Prosecutors say six people were shot and one of them, an alleged gang member, died. This is just one of the shootings that prosecutors say the group carried out.
“They are dangerous people,” Mayor Eric Adams said. “And it’s a small number of them. They’re repeated recidivists that as soon as you let them out, they are back on our streets, wreaking havoc.”
“These gangs are joining together to become more powerful and, as a result, makes us all a lot less safe,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez says a grand jury indicted 32 alleged gang members for shootings, possessing guns, and using stolen cars during shootings, to eliminate rivals.
Cops seized 32 firearms during the arrests and the DA alleges Michael Williams — a Flatbush-based rapper widely known as Sheff G — was behind much of the violence, saying he offered money and jewelry in exchange for shootings like the one in 2020.
“Just two days later, Sheff G takes the shooters from this incident to a very lavish steak dinner to celebrate the score against their rivals,” Gonzalez added.
The 140-count indictment involves 12 shootings and 13 shooting victims, some of whom were innocent bystanders. Charges against the alleged gang members include second-degree murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, kidnapping and assault. Investigators say Sheff G boasted about his criminal activity to his one million followers on Instagram.
“When you have millions of views, young people are listening and watching and there’s a duplication of the behavior that is spreading like a cancer throughout our communities,” Adams said.
“If you’re engaging in street violence, if you’re taking guns and shooting rivals, if you’re hurting innocent bystanders, the NYPD will eventually tack your case and bring you to the court of law,” Gonzalez said.
Twenty-five of the defendants have been arrested. Cops are still searching for the other seven.
Prosecutors say Sheff G is currently in jail on an unrelated gun charge to which he’s already pleaded guilty. He faces 5-25 years in prison in connection with this new indictment if convicted.
