SANTA ANNA, Calif. — It has been illegal for non-citizens to cast a ballot in federal and statewide elections since Congress passed the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act in 1996. But, that could change in a local community going into the future.
Santa Ana residents will have their say on if non-citizens will be allowed to vote in municipal elections, with Measure DD on the ballot. Jose Perea has lived in the city since he moved from Mexico 18 years ago to be reunited with his family. According to Census data, roughly 20% of residents in Santa Ana don't have citizenship.
The measure has opposition and support from around the community, with both sides stating their cases on why they want to see the measure passed or denied.
