New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation into law Wednesday aimed to help combat human trafficking in the state, her office said.

The law expands the membership of the New York State Interagency Task Force and the length of duty to ensure the work the task force does continues uninterrupted.

Transportation hubs across the state will also be displaying information that may be helpful to victims of human trafficking and provide them information on services available.

In the state budget this year, $2.3 million was awarded to contractors that provide services to victims of human trafficking.

“Human trafficking is a nightmare no one should have to experience — even one victim is too many,” Hochul said in a statement. “I am proud to sign this legislation to protect the thousands of individuals who fall victim to human trafficking, and I want thank my partners in the legislature for their work in getting these bills through to the finish line.”

The Division of Criminal Justice Services has confirmed 240 trafficked individuals in New York state since the beginning of this year. The state confirmed 249 trafficked persons in 2022 and and 295 in 2021.
